What's Up Wednesday, Glass Case of Emotion Edition

What I'm Reading:

Y'all, I finished OCD LOVE STORY and I may have had a slight breakdown towards the end, so you know it was good. Then I carried on filling in my Sara Zarr blanks and read SWEETHEARTS which also gave me a slight emotional breakdown. What can I say? I don't cry over tons of books but when I get weepy, I get hella weepy.

Last weekend I also read UNTEACHABLE by Leah Raeder, which is kind of NA but also kind of YA but also kind of adult romance? I don't know. It was steamy hot and also beautifully written--my main beef with it was the ending, but it wasn't enough to completely put me off the story. Now I'm reading THE REECE MALCOLM LIST by Amy Spalding, which is an excellent read if you're into belting show tunes in your spare time. Which, of course, I'm not. Nope. I don't sing all the parts of Montage from A Chorus Line in my car, not at all.

What I'm Writing:

I finally, finally finished transferring all my edits from paper to computer, and I've put that story aside for a little while so I can just have some distance and a clearer vision when I eventually return to it. In the meantime, I'm drafting this new WIP in fits and starts--fits of 500 words at a time, of course. Slow and steady!

What Inspires Me Right Now:

Does anyone remember a video I put in this section a while back, of ballet dancers from The Australian Ballet talking about their pointe shoes? I recently discovered another video from them, this time talking about how they get into character for a performance. Again, it's a beautiful video, and I could watch it over and over again.

What Else I've Been Up To:

Watching Sons of Anarchy. Good lord, that show. I definitely recommend getting into it (the first four seasons are on Netflix here), especially if you're a fan of Weeds/Breaking Bad/anything like that. The characters are key for me--when I see them doing stupid things I just want to shake them, but I love them at the same time. (Don't ask me to pick a favourite!)

What's up with you?

xoxo

What's Up Wednesday, OCD Edition

{click here for a full list of participants!}

What I'm Reading:

After reading THE AFTER GIRLS (which I liked but didn't fall head-over-heels in love with), I reread an old favourite: PROM by Laurie Halse Anderson. I'm pretty sure I've written about it on this here blog before, but seriously, if you haven't read it? DO IT. The voice in this book is insane, and it's just a fun, awesome story. My current read is OCD LOVE STORY by Corey Ann Haydu. I already love Bea and I love the voice of this story. (I effing love good voice so much!) Let's hope the rest of the book lives up to my expectations!

What I'm Writing:

The one problem with physically editing your work, as in putting pen to paper, is that at the end of it all you have to transfer it back to your computer. Which is time-consuming and annoying and yeah I'm putting it off so hard.

You know what is a really excellent way to put off working on an MS? Starting a new MS. I'm going to try to not hate drafting this time around, because I really do hate drafting but sometimes I think my hatred of it makes it worse than it really is. (Does that make sense?) And this is a fun* story, so I want to make writing it fun.

*As fun as a story involving suicide and missing girls can be. But there's pretty dresses too, and did I mention surfing?

What Inspires Me Right Now:

I'm reading/buying/lusting after so many books, and there is really is nothing like a good story to make you want to be a better writer. So my inspiration this week is words and the wonderful people that make them so good.

What Else I've Been Up To:

Reader, I ran again. Once. I don't know, it's just not my jam. I'd rather take another dance class or go swimming. You can't jazz hands while you run. (I guess you could, actually. Maybe that's where I'm going wrong.)

Another thing that I have taken up lately is cross-stitching! Remember that? With the big plastic square "fabric" and needles that poked holes in all your fingers? Well, I have proper fabric (aida) now, and some rad eighties mean-girl-flicks pieces in progress. It's so very.

What's Up Wednesday, Beyoncé Edition

Hello, first WUW of 2014. You look pretty. Did you do something to your hair?

{Check out Jaime's blog for a full list of participants!}

What I'm Reading:

THE AFTER GIRLS by Leah Konen, which I think (hope) is going to be one of those is-this-real-or-is-this-not-real-what-is-happening books because I adore those books. (Think 17&GONE, IMAGINARY GIRLS, CHARM AND STRANGE.)

After this I have SO MANY BOOKS to read. I went a little crazy with the one-click-ordering. But can you blame me, when there are so many excellent books out there?

What I'm Writing:

Since I just finished a first round of revisions on the rewrite, I'm taking a break. I love revising so much more than drafting!

I'm just kind of playing around to see what I want to write next, how I want to write it, how different from my usual writing I want to go…(the answer is a lot, but we'll see. I'm terrible with change.)

I was going to give a query update but there really isn't anything to update. Rejections, requests, anxious waiting. We all know how it goes!

What Inspires Me Lately:

Yeah, still Beyoncé. Always Beyoncé. Beyoncé Forever. (XO is the theme song to the new thing I'm playing around with, fer sure.)

What Else I've Been Up To:

In some insane moment I decided that I would finally attempt running. The reality is that I can't run for one minute and I'm not actually sure how one runs. I'm not sure what to do with my feet, and my arms are everywhere! I can crush a dance class, I got kick-ball-changes for days, but run? Nuh uh. But, now I am trying, and I have one question for all you runners: why?!

Check back next week to see if I've kept this up. (And if I haven't, feel free to scold me.)

xoxo
