What's Up Wednesday: Ready. Set. Write! #3

Hello! It's that time again, and this week I have some actual structured goals!
Click here for a full list of participants!

What I'm Reading:

I finished and loved ONCE WAS LOST; I really enjoyed the religious themes and how Sammy had to fight to find herself again. Now I'm reading DARE ME by Megan Abbott, which seems like it's going to be all kinds of dark and twisty and excellent. And it's an adult book! Shock horror, I know!

What I'm Writing:

I have finished this round of revisions and my MS is now with the fabulous Sara again, out of my sight and out of my mind (oh, who am I kidding? These things are never out of my mind!) So I've gone back to the rewrite (which shall be known as TQK2) I started about a month ago, and I just want to get back into the feel of this story.

Goals for this week:

  • Write 500 or so words each writing day (I usually don't write on the weekends, and sometimes not on Fridays either)
  • Work on my query
  • Start working on a synopsis
I do not want to write a synopsis, but it is a necessary evil, I suppose...

What Inspires Me Right Now:

This video is so incredible and I cannot even fathom how it was created. Plus, it's perfect for my writing right now, because Born & Raised was the soundtrack to the first draft of the MS I'm rewriting, so it's double inspiration :)

And I have to add, after everything that happened in America while I was asleep, Senator Wendy Davis. WHAT A BAMF.

What Else I've Been Up To:

This week's update brought to you by TV shows:
  • Catching up on Criminal Minds, which is one of my favourite shows and is seriously giving me the feels this season.
  • Not watching Pretty Little Liars--I've been pissed since the season 2 finale, but I still watched season 3 even though every episode drove me crazy. But I'm committed to abstaining this time. I JUST WANT TO KNOW WHO KILLED ALI!
  • Trying to watch Breaking Bad--I say trying because I'm one episode into season 2, which is where I've been for about three weeks. I really enjoy it while I'm watching it, but when I'm not I kind of forget about it. It's weird. I'm going to keep trying, though!
Ciao, my lovelies--I hope you all have excellent writing/reading/whatever weeks!

xoxo

What's Up Wednesday: Ready. Set. Write! #2

Clicke here for a full list of participants!
What I'm Reading:

I'm about to start ONCE WAS LOST by Sara Zarr (which is now called WHAT WAS LOST, I believe, but the copy I have is old from the library.) I loved, loved, loved HOW TO SAVE A LIFE so I have high hopes for this one!

What I'm Writing:

Revisions are going well! Every time I get feedback/am about to start a new round of revisions, I make a list of everything I need to do so I can keep track and work through it. Right now, everything on the list is checked off except for a few little things, and I'm about to start a read-through where I'll work on those things (trimming dialogue, checking for POV switching, things like that.) I am LOVING the cheerleading aspect of RSW--I'm pretty good about writing/working consistently and keeping myself accountable, but writing can be lonely and I can get pretty down on myself, so it's awesome to have people shooting me supportive messages! And I'm having tons of fun doing the same :)

How about a teeny, tiny snippet of my MS?

“Hey, Mar.” She turned around, wearing a carefully neutral face. “Can I ask you a question?”
Marlene, smudging blush onto her cheeks, raised her eyes from her compact. “What?”
            “Do you think…do I look…”
            “Spit it out, Tuesday.”
She sighed dramatically. “Is this too much boob? Because I usually go for Carrie Underwood but I’m feeling a little Dolly tonight.”
Marlene cracked a little smile. “You wish you looked like Dolly,” she said.
“Hell yeah, I wish I looked like Dolly! Well, young Dolly, because you know I will always love her, but she looks a hot mess these days.”
Aaaand that about sums up my MC.

What Inspires Me Right Now:

I've watched this very short film a few times now and it's just as inspiring to me every single time. I've said before how much I love the behind-the-scenes aspects of ballet; I think it's because being a writer, I know how much goes into creating a story and how many hours of hard, hard work it takes, so I want to appreciate that aspect of other creative pursuits.

What Else I've Been Up To:

Father's Day was Sunday so my brother came down, and as we are the world's worst children we went out on Sunday morning to get our dad something. Long story short, we came across a tiny carousel and this happened:

So proud of him!

Hope everybody's week went well and catch me on Twitter for some #ReadySetWrite fun!

What's Up Wednesday: Ready. Set. WRITE!

Ready to set some writing goals?

What I'm Reading:

I've just started SHIVER by Maggie Stiefvater (yeah, I'm very behind the times, I know) but I don't know if I'm going to keep going with it because I'm not sure I want to get into a series right now. And I had an Amazon splurge the other day, so now I have some sure-to-be-awesome books waiting for me...

What I'm Writing:

My summer writing goals are pretty general (I'll explain why.)

  1. Finish revising FATE AND OTHER GAMES.
  2. Start querying.
  3. Make some good progress on my rewrite.

I don't do very well with specific goals (like "I will write 10k this week!" or "Query by the end of June!") because I stress myself out trying to meet them, and then I feel really disappointed if I don't meet them. I'm also making them pretty general because I don't know exact;y what I'm going to have to do to finish my revisions; maybe they'll be done after this round, or maybe I'll have more to do--you can never know. As for my rewrite, I'm not setting any word or chapter goals for it because I don't know when I'll be able to move on to that, and it's quite possible that when I do get around to it I'll be at the stage where 30 words a day is good progress because these revisions will have killed my brain.

What Inspires Me Right Now:

Very specific this week, but I'm inspired by Leigh Ann Kopans (<--clickedy click because she's lovely!) She's just self-published her first book, ONE, and I've been following her journey from the announcement until now. I've been so impressed with the amount of effort, time, and heart she's put into it all, and how she's approached it. Seeing someone work so hard to achieve their goal is always inspiring, but there's something extra-special about this instance. I don't know what, exactly, but I will say that I got my copy of ONE on Monday (the first self-published book I've ever bought) and I can't wait to read it.

What Else I've Been Up To:

A pretty picture from my travels
Last week I said I was going to do something fun so I'd have something to write here...well! I hung out with a couple of my friends who are back home for the summer, got a pretty pedicure, treated myself to lunch at this cute French bistro, went wandering around Marlborough (which is a nice and very rah* town near me), bought some fancy chocolates, and played bingo (I almost won, but I was too nervous to shout out and so I made my friend  Alice do it, but she didn't know what to say, and long story short we made fools of ourselves in front of all the bingo hotshots and laughed hysterically through the next three games.)

I also went to the hospital to see the orthodontist this morning, because I have an underbite and crooked teeth and I've been wanting braces for so long...looks like I'll finally be getting them! Yay braces!

Can't wait to see what everyone's goals are and to start cheering everybody on :) As always, hop on over to Jaime's blog to see what everyone else is up to!

xoxo

*rah means posh. Kate Middleton is rah. Harry and Wills are super rah, dahling.

What's Up Wednesday

What I'm Reading:

BLAZE by Laurie Boyle Crompton, which I'm finding pretty fun and easy so far.

Totally digging the comic book angle, but not so much digging this: "Stuart is one of only three black students in our school, which makes him a semi-celebrity. I feel somewhat hip and urban having him here at my house." Oh, come on, now. Hip and urban? You're just trying to annoy me, aren't you?

What I'm Writing:

Back to my revisions (yay? I don't know anymore.) Had some excellent and very helpful feedback from Sara (again) and Suzi, so I have plenty to work on. I'm hoping I can get through it by next week, in time for Ready. Set. WRITE! (Click it. You know you want to.) I've just added a new chapter and I have a date with an out-of-control Chapter 9 when I finish writing this. YOU WILL BE BEATEN, MANUSCRIPT.

What Inspires Me Right Now:

Good music. Dreaming about the future. Photographs of beautiful things. Other people's determination. Blue skies. Liking what I'm writing.

What Else I've Been Up To

...Yet again, not much. Working, sleeping, getting some sun while it's here. (I am so very boring.) This week I'm going to do something fun so I'll have something to talk about next week! (Any suggestions for something fun and different and cheap/free to do? Hit me up!)

Short and sweet this week. Back to revising I go...

xoxo
